Events & Social

In 2010 we have an ambitious plan to get as many wellness speakers as we can. We are also hoping to use the new extension this year and this will enable us to spread out further giving more privacy between units. Once we are able to re-distribute ourselves, we hope to be able to form more specialist units.

MIKE BAIRD DINNER & AUCTION

The member for Manly, Mr Mike Baird MP recently hosted a fundraiser for Pioneer at Manly Golf Club in June.

The night began with drinks and nibblies and after that we were ushered into the dining room for dinner and an auction. The M.C for the occasion was none other than dual Olympian - Shelley Oates-Wilding.

Mr Baird’s opening address was down to earth and heart-warming. Not only was it a gala dinner but the entertainment card was full of young rising stars. We enjoyed a performance from a group of students from Mackellar Girls High School and another young performer, Phoebe Star, also appeared onstage and sang and performed well.

The fundraiser began after dinner with all proceeds going to Pioneer and to Manly Oval for a white picket fence. The Auctioneer for the night was well known Australian actor Simon Westaway.

Our very own director at Pioneer, Jason Kioko, gave a warm and uplifting speech about how the Clubhouse evolved and how it offers hope and friendship to those suffering from a mental illness. Jason also spoke about how Pioneer gives an out stretched hand to those who are suffering as well as highlighting how Pioneer provides a pathway for sufferers to find a way to recovery. All in all Jason had the audience to his liking I thought!

I, on behalf of everyone from Pioneer Clubhouse, would like to thank Mr Baird, the Manly Golf Club and to all involved including the sponsors a big thankyou from the bottom of our heart. Thank you again.

THE BOAT THAT ROCKED Review

Director: RICHARD CURTIS
(the brother of one of our members)

What it is about ...

During the 60's, radio stations were limited to a certain number of hours that pop music could be played per week. This story is about a group of DJ’s that played 24 hours of pop music per day, from a boat offshore of Britain. This was legal, as they weren’t in the country, however, the government planned to shut them down, anyway that they could. The movie is about the constant battle between the government having control of their airways and the young people of Britain wanting to enjoy pop music.

Below are some of the photos from the night. Some of us are dressed up in 60’s theme, which made the night really exciting and interesting.
