Pioneer Clubhouse Building Fund
What is this appeal for?
Pioneer Clubhouse has been a vital part of the Manly Community since 1994, providing important support and recovery services to people who are recovering from mental illness. Pioneer Clubhouse was started by local community leaders and families in response to the unmet needs of people with mental illness and their families.
People recovering from mental illness need support to get their lives back on track, and Pioneer Clubhouse provides these in a very supporting, empowering and effective environment. It is the first service based on the 'clubhouse model of psychosocial rehabilitation' developed in NSW.
Pioneer Clubhouse is located in Quirk Road, in a building owned by Manly Council, which was formerly the Manly Women's Bowling Club. When the Bowling Club wound up the members specifically asked Council to use the site for a worthwhile community purpose. The local community have supported Pioneer Clubhouse, which while receiving NSW Health funding for it staff, has never received a single dollar of State funding to pay for renovations, maintenance or equipment. As the building is quite old it needs substantial renovation work.
Pioneer Clubhouse needs more space for its many members and Manly Council has provided an extension to the building. However Manly Council has only funded the extension to 'lock up' stage, leaving us to find the funds, and/or kind, to fit out the building, including new bathrooms, kitchen and dining room. We are therefore seeking your support for this very worthwhile project.
How will the funds be used?

Pioneer Clubhouse Ongoing Expenses
Pioneer Clubhouse has succumbed to the effects of the GFC and needs more annual income to cover the ever increasing cost base in our budget.
- It is costing us more for postage of our two-monthly Pioneer Post, due to Australia Post's more stringent application of its pricing structure.
- Fuel expenses keep increasing.
- Food prices keep squeezing what our cafe can provide.
- Office and computer supplies and services costs have blown-out this financial year.
- Energy supply prices are about to jump.
- Communication costs - we need to investigate cheaper alternatives.
- We were donated a gas-guzzelling Ford Falcon wagon compared to the two Holdens. The holdens are covered in our budget but the fuel, maintenance and running costs of the Falcon are eating into our budget severely.
