
Eat Well Move Well Stay Well Program (EMS)
The Goals of the EMS Project..
The EMS is a project designed to improve physical and mental wellbeing of people with a mental illness and to provide opportunities for people with a mental illness to be peer educators, thereby helping in their Recovery journeys. The objectives of the EMS Project are to improve the physical wellbeing of people with a mental illness by providing opportunities for participation in:
- Specially designed twelve week health and wellbeing program in a supervised, safe and well equipped area. This will include walking groups, swimming, cooking, education and gym program groups.
- Peer mentoring roles and a peer mentoring education program
- Physical activity via a gym program that has been tailored to the target group and incorporates challenges and side effects faced as a result of the use of medications.
- Specific healthy lifestyle educational sessions
The EMS Project will work in conjunction with and engage professional service providers such as local General Practitioners, Psychiatrists, Occupational Therapists and Mental Health Services to ensure accurate measurement and monitoring of the fitness levels’ of each program participant - before, during and after completion of the program. Specific measurements will occur in weeks 1, 6 and 12.Evaluation of the Project will occur at regular intervals throughout the 12 weeks, and a final report prepared for the Department of Health by the end of January 2010.
EMS Target Group
.The target group for this project are people with a severe and chronic mental illness who may require assistance with weight management, fitness and lifestyle choices.
EMS Funding..
The Eat Well, Move Well, Stay Well (EMS) Program is funded by the Department of Health, and Ageing (DoHA). Recovery Services is managing this project and is a service of the Schizophrenia Fellowship of NSW Inc. (SFNSW).
Donate to EMS..
Although funded by the NSW Department of Health and Ageing, the EMS still has a high demand for gym and health equipment, volunteers, etc.
