Sunflower Centre Volunteer Opportunities

There are multiple opportunities, under the direction of the Fellowship’s Hunter Programs Coordinator, to volunteer and provide support to the Sunflower Centre’s Programs and Activities. These opportunities include:

  • Attend relevant training and information sessions as required,
  • Provide administrative support to Sunflower Centre programs and activities,
  • Reception duties for the Sunflower Centre, including face to face contact, telephone and email contacts,
  • Provide information and referral to relevant services for people seeking support,
  • When required, assist with the organisation of Sunflower Centre and Program events and activities,
  • Develop and maintain effecting working relationships with other staff and volunteers,
  • Evaluate, report on and continuously improve your own professional performance, knowledge and skills,
  • Other volunteer related duties required to contribute to the successful operation of the Sunflower Centre, its programs and related activities.

Outreach Volunteer

Under the direction of the Fellowship’s Hunter Programs Coordinator assist with the provision of an outreach service to isolated consumers and carers in the Hunter Region

  • Attend relevant training and information sessions as required,
  • Make regular telephone calls to mental health consumers who are registered with the Sunflower Centre’s Outreach Service,
  • Where required meet with mental health consumers who are looking for extra support,
  • Where required provide support to mental health consumers to attend prearranged appointments (e.g. Centrelink),
  • Complete relevant paperwork associated with the Sunflower Centre’s Outreach Program,
  • Develop and maintain effecting working relationships with other staff and volunteers,
  • To evaluate, report on and continuously improve your own professional performance, knowledge and skills,
  • Related duties required to contribute to the successful operation of the Sunflower Centre, its programs and related activities.

Forensic Community Reintegration Program Volunteer

Under the direction of the Fellowship’s Hunter Programs Coordinator, provide supervision for forensic mental health consumers at Morisset Hospital.

A forensic mental health consumer, is someone who has been found Not Guilty by reason of Mental Illness of a criminal offense.

  • Attend relevant training and information sessions as required,
  • With another Program volunteer(s), attend pre-arranged outings with forensic mental health consumers at Morisset to locations such as Morisset, Toronto, Tuggerah, Newcastle and other suitable locations,
  • Attend the Sunflower Centre’s Barbeque at Morisset Hospital (currently held on the 4th Sunday of each month) every three months after initial recruitment period,
  • Complete relevant paperwork as detailed in the Program Handbook, including writing notes in client files and completing reflective journals in a timely fashion,
  • Complete and submit paperwork relevant to volunteer duties, including travel claims and reimbursement requests,
  • Develop and maintain effecting working relationships with other staff and volunteers,
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with Hunter New England Mental Health staff at Morisset Hospital,
  • To evaluate, report on and continuously improve your own professional performance, knowledge and skills,
  • Other volunteer related duties required to ensure the successful implementation of the Forensic Community Reintegration Program.
