Carer Stories

In 2010 we focussed on the many challenges and stresses that confront carers of people with a mental illness. The caring role is often carried out in isolation. Unfortunately a large part of this isolation is caused by misperceptions, fear and stigmatising beliefs of the community at large. As mental illness is not a visible illness or disability, many carers do not even see themselves as providing care; indeed this problem has often stretched to Government as well. National COAG reforms and attention to carers’ issues in the NSW Parliament have started to change that and we want carers across the State to have access to the new programs that will support them.
