About our support groups

"Mutual help groups are a powerful and constructive means for people to help themselves and each other. The basic dignity of each human being is expressed in his or her capacity to be involved in a reciprocal helping exchange. Out of this compassion comes cooperation. From this cooperation comes community..." Phyllis Silverman, PhD, Dept of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School.

Our groups...

Our support groups are the lifeblood of the Fellowship. Currently numbering 30 across both rural and metropolitan areas of New South Wales, our support groups are unique in that they are for everyone: people with a mental illness, relatives, friends, partners, health professionals and interested members of the public. While our organisation's name is the Schizophrenia Fellowship, we provide services and support for everyone with a mental illness.

Support groups are an integral part of the Schizophrenia Fellowship of NSW Inc. Through the sharing of experiences, most groups provide their members with information, support and advice, and these functions enable people who are living with schizophrenia (be they carers, consumers or dedicated health professionals) to understand more about mental illness and to receive vital contact with people who find themselves in similar situations.

The support groups are very individual in that each have their own style and format. For more information on the support group in your area, we suggest you phone the relevant group leader.
